Novelis partners with Nespresso
Novelis Inc. has partnered with Nespresso to launch the first coffee capsule made of 80 percent recycled aluminum. Composed of a thinner aluminum foil, the new capsules contain 9.2 percent less aluminum material and are 8 percent lighter than previous models. The foil protects freshness and aromas and provides a strong barrier against oxygen, light and humidity.

Kennametal supports aerospace academy
Kennametal Inc., Latrobe, Pennsylvania, has partnered with Titans of CNC on its Aerospace Academy, an online education platform designed to teach programmers and machinists next-generation aerospace machining and manufacturing. Powered by Kennametal’s tooling solutions, the Titans of CNC Aerospace Academy offers free courses to machinists to teach them about the materials, tooling and techniques used in advanced aerospace manufacturing. The Aerospace Academy includes modules on CAD/CAM/CNC machining, automation and business management processes and quoting.

Tenaris to expand melt shop
Tenaris plans to spend $11 million at its melt shop in Koppel, Pennsylvania, to expand its size range through casting line upgrades. The company expects these upgrades will also improve safety, IT and automation systems at the mill. The expansion will allow the Koppel plant to produce bars in a wider range of sizes and secure a reliable source of billets for Tenaris’s seamless tubing mills in Bay City, Texas; Ambridge, Pennsylvania; and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Toyota orders Andritz laser welding system
Andritz, Graz, Austria, has received an order to build three SouTrac II tailor-welded blank laser (TWB) welding systems for Toyota Motor North America. The machinery builder worked with Toyota to design and develop this system. The systems are specifically suited for curved applications. The exclusive processing head makes the system capable of laser-welding small radii and polynomial seams. The applications will support Toyota’s new global architecture. The SouTrac fully automated production system will also be capable of integrating automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) that will connect plant logistics systems with warehouse and production equipment.

Extruder makes products for healthcare workers
Gateway Extrusions, Union, Missouri, is using its in-house 3D printing capacity to make and donate face mask extenders for healthcare workers. The company typically uses its 3D printer to make aluminum extrusion cross-section prototypes. Additive manufacturing equipment operates directly from electronic file design drawings developed in AutoCAD (and similar software) to generate 3D models.
