Toll processor invests in heavy-gauge CTL/leveler
Mississippi Steel Processing, Columbus, Mississippi, is installing a heavy-gauge cut-to-length line and stretcher leveling system from Red Bud Industries. The company expects to start up the line this spring. The increased productivity and capacity provided by the new hybrid system will enable MSP to expand its product line and improve delivery times throughout the South. The line will accept coils up to 40 tons, in gauges up to 0.625-inch thick and widths up to 84 inches.

UPM orders slitter for stainless coil
United Performance Metals has ordered a Braner/Loopco turret head slitter to produce ultra-precision high-strength stainless slit coil in its Hamilton, Ohio, coil processing center. The slitter, designed to produce thin-gauge narrow stainless slit coils with mechanical properties to 200,000-psi (1380 MPa), will employ precision eccentric steel strippers rather than conventional rubber stripper rings in order to enhance ultra-precision thin gauge slit coil quality.
Greenpoint Metals installs multi-blanking line
Greenpoint Metals Inc., Franklin, Ohio, has installed a 0.135-inch by 72-inch-wide Red Bud Industries multi-cut blanking line with stretcher leveler. The new line was designed to level and cut to length high-strength materials. The line can handle coils up to 30 tons.
Reliance to acquire Fry Steel
Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co., Los Angeles, has signed an agreement to purchase all the outstanding capital stock of Fry Steel Co., Santa Fe Springs, California. Founded in 1948 and family owned for nearly 50 years, Fry Steel next-day delivery through its proprietary fleet of trucks. Fry Steel performs cutting services on over 8,000 types and conditions of long bar product including stainless, alloy, aluminum, carbon, brass and bronze. The transaction is expected to close early during first quarter. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
UPG announces expansion
Chicago-based UPG Enterprises LLC, which operates metals and logistics companies, plans to open a branch of Contractors Steel in Arizona, expanding the geographic footprint of both brands. UPG also consolidated Contractors Steel’s branch in Livonia, Michigan, into its Van Buren, Michigan, facility. Equipment from the Livonia plant will be relocated to other Contractors locations.

The village of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin’s Plan Commission approved final site and operational plans to lease a warehouse to Ta Chen International. The distributor of stainless steel and aluminum plans to occupy the entire 204,800-square-foot building for dry storage/warehousing. Ta Chen intends to store aluminum coils, which are 5 feet in diameter and 6 feet tall, on pallets. Ta Chen sought to move in during January. The company expected to employ four people full time at the warehouse.
